Services: Serving the Society
The information and the knowledge of the geological constitution of the territory
The Geological Institute of Catalonia (IGC) was established with the aim of achieving, in the field of Geology, an adequate knowledge of the surface and the subsurface, for its application in civil works, land and urban planning, geological hazard assessment and the drawing up of geothematic maps.
Established in 2005, the IGC is Europe's youngest Geological Institute, with a very dynamic spirit. Heir to the Geological Survey of Catalonia and to a long Catalan geological tradition, the IGC was born with a vocation for serving the socity of the 21st century.
To this aim, it has a multidisciplinary group of professionals with proven experience and knowledge in diverse fields of Earth sciences. This allows a response to the present needs in the field of geology and related disciplines: soil science and pedology, geophysics, seismology, geological engineering and geotechnics.
The IGC is a public undertaking, attached to the Ministry of Town and Country Planning and Sustainability.
Technical support to land and urbanism planning
The IGC supplies basic geological and specialised information on geological hazard, both for public administrations and private corporations:
  • Administrative reports on geological hazards and environmental geology.
  • Geological and paleontological heritage.
  • Recommendations, protocols and technical specifications for geological and geotechnical surveys and geological hazard assessments.
Applied Geology and Geophysics
The practical use of the IGC geological knowledge includes its application to geotechnical works for civil infrastructures as buildings, tunnels and other subterranean works. This task includes hydrogeology and surface hydrology studies and the application of diverse geophysical techniques.
Data Centre and Geological Archive
IGC's main goals are to gather new geological information, to centralize the existing information and to make it available to the Administration and the citizens.
The Data Centre and Geological Archive is the instrument to reach these objectives.
Geological heritage
Knowing the geology is to enjoy the landscape.

Geological hazards assessment and prevention
In geological hazard circumstances (rock falls, landslides, subsidence, collapses, torrential floods, avalanches, earthquakes or other accidents due to geological phenomena) immediate intervention is required to evaluate the situation and to support the emergence teams.
The IGC also undertakes hazard monitoring, evaluation studies and follow-up services, through auscultation and control networks.
Seismic Information System
The Seismic Information System records the seismicity and provides suitable information on the seismic risk to civil defence organizations, to the scientific community and to the citizens.
Seismological data are acquired through the instrumental recording networks. Currently they consist of 16 seismic broad band stations and 3 accelerographs, all of them linked by a communications satellite of the VSAT network, in addition to the accelerometers network, with 17 stations in operation.
The seismological data reception, recording and analysis centre of the IGC is in charge of emitting official statements through a fast alert system.
Snow Avalanche Prediction Service
To inform about the condition of the snow pack and the level of avalanche hazard during the winter season (from December to May, or when required by the metereological conditions) a daily Avalanche Danger Bulletin, is publicly issued at Regional and Local scale. It is based on the European snow and avalanche scale.
The Avalanche Danger Bulletin includes the meteorological forecast, the characteristics of the snow mantle, and the trend and the evolution of the hazard for the next 24-48 hours following its publication. It is available through internet at www.igc.cat and www.meteo.cat.
International Projects
Being a dynamic and enterprising centre, the IGC also carries out:
- Projects for international organizations.
- Cooperation projects.
- Technical Assistance.
- Projects in cooperation with European Institutions.
Geological, pedological and geothematic cartography

The Geological Map of Catalonia

The Geological Map of Catalonia is the result of integrating six "Geoworks". Each one of them generates an entire cartographical series and the correlative database systems. Geoworks have the target to acquire, elaborate and integrate the geological, pedological and geothematic information relative to the entire Catalan territory,  at the suitable scales for land planning and urbanism.

  • Geowork I: Geological Map 1:25 000
  • Geowork II: Geoanthropic Map 1:25 000
  • Geowork III: Geological Map of urban areas 1:5 000
  • Geowork IV: Soils Map 1:25 000
  • Geowork V: Hydro-geological Map 1:25 000
  • Geowork VI: Map for the prevention of geological hazards 1:25 000

Other cartographic products

The IGC also produces specific geothematic maps as per the users' or customers' needs, at different scales, as well as the related databases and geographical information systems.

  • Geological Series of Catalonia 1:50 000
  • Geological Series of Catalonia 1:100 000
  • Geothematic Series 1:250 000
  • Soils Map of Catalonia 1:250 000
  • Avalanche Areas Map 1:25 000
Promotion and Spreading of Earth Sciences
The IGC also has the mission of promoting activities of diffusion and training in the fields of geology and related disciplines.
Research and Development: towards a safer and more sustainable Earth

The main objective of our Research Plan is to promote the research and the development in the field of the active and recent geological processes which are developing on the Earth's surface and in the subsurface.
Besides looking for a continuous improvement of our services, we want to potentiate other work fields and to adapt ourselves to new technologies and to the needs of the society, the environment and the land management.
